ISSB a guideline!

Interested in joining armed forces?

If yes then here's a complete guide to ISSB from people who have been to ISSB and were recommended.
To appear in ISSB you need to have cleared the initial tests of Pakistan armed forces including Army, Navy and Air Force. If you clear this hurdle the next  step is the physical test. In it u have to complete 1 mile in 8min 30 sec, you have to do 3 chin ups,15 push ups and 15 sit ups. After the successful completion of physical test you move towards the medical test  in which your weight, height and eyesight are tested and if you come up to the mark then the next step towards your successful career in armed forces is ISSB. No need to worry just keep calm and be positive. Do whatever they ask you to do there in ISSB. Keep your confidence high and it can be done by staying relaxed. Its not a big deal, do tasks as you do in your daily life. And don't LIE.Be straight forward and honest.
You need to fill the ISSB forms with proper care otherwise your forms will be rejected. This ISSB form will get you a call letter from ISSB on which the date of ISSB and place will be mentioned. You are advised to give a proper mailing address where you are sure you can get the mail in time. Once you get the call from ISSB you have to appear in ISSB.  Bring along the required documents otherwise they may send you back.

On the day of arrival you will be called to fill the forms; your bio-data and  stuff. Provide correct information and do not hide anything. Mention your qualities and your short-comings. Remember whatever you write there as you will be interviewed from your forms. They do not select those who try to cheat on them. Truthfulness is a must quality that you need to have.

On the first day(the next day of your arrival) you will be called for screening tests. Intelligence tests both verbal and non-verbal will be taken and you can be screened out if you do not score the minimum required marks; 50-60% .Screening tests include making sentences from pictures, picking up the odd one out e.t.c. After screening tests, psychological tests are taken that include story writing, completing sentences both in Urdu and English. An important tip for these tests is to be positive. Show courage, fearless attitude, love towards Pakistan, army and your parents with your words and sentences. Write short stories but try to reach some conclusion at least. Write stories of bravery especially related to armed forces. There are 3-4 minutes to complete your stories so try to be real quick with your pen. You will be asked to write stories on pictures that will be displayed on screen and also on some incomplete lines like "One day Ali was out on a picnic ........". In the same way while completing sentences only 8-10 seconds will be given to you per sentence and there will be a lot of sentences. If you cannot complete a sentence on a word skip it and write on the next word. Words will be shown on a projector screen and you will have to write on a piece of paper given to you. Keep the numbering right otherwise it will difficult for you and them to understand your sentences. I guess you are worried a bit but believe me you will find it a piece of cake once you start doing this practice. BE QUICK AND RELAXED that's the key to your success.

Coming to the second day, groups are made and you are assigned your chest number. You are advised to call each other by chest numbers in front of your group testing officers( GTOs). GTO will take you to a room where group discussion will be done. Just be positive and confident and you'll just do great. One important thing, don't sit there quiet but try to participate in the discussion. It does not matter what is your accent they just see your confidence level. See the alphabet written outside the room. GTO might ask you to say a word starting from that alphabet. For example F; I know the first word coming to mind(most of you) is FUCK. LOL don't ever say a negative word in front of a GTO. You can say freedom, fearless, father etc. See what I told you earlier reflects in these words. There is hope, positiveness and love in these three words. Anyways moving on you will be given a topic either in Urdu or in English depending on your choice and you will be asked to go out for two minutes to think about your topic. Make up a sketch of what you are going to speak in the room. Think of a few keywords on which you'll speak for two minutes. You will be asked to make a plan(command task) on something placed in front of you. They will guide you there and listen and remember whatever they say. They often ask things from what they told you. Co-operate with each other and try to reach the endpoint with a decent plan. Don't worry if you do not make a good plan, just help each other out and you'll be alright. Then there are progressive group tasks that are to be completed by the whole group in the given time. Be co-operative and help each other. Try to be active and ever-ready to take the initiative.

There are half group tasks in which your group will be split into two and will be asked to perform some tasks. Take these tasks as fun activities then you will be able to do these better.  Remember the instructions given to you by the GTO. Most candidates fail to complete the tasks but no issue you never give up that's the key. And if they figure out that you can complete the task even then they will call you back. BUCK UP!

The Third Day: There will be individual obstacles like:
  1. Long jump.
  2. Walking over inclined small wooden planks.
  3. Crawling like a monkey.
  4. Waking across parallel ropes.
  5. Rope climbing
  6. Passing through Tyre.
  7. Tarzan swing
  8. Tarzan jump.
  9. Crossing over horizontal plank.
  10.  Running over inclined plank.
  11. Monkey bridge .
There will be a time span of 2 or 3 minutes. You can repeat these obstacles if you complete them once. If you are unable to cross an obstacle leave it for the time being and move to the next one. After completing all other obstacles you can come back to complete the obstacle you could not cross. Just show that you are brave, don't be afraid these hurdles are easy (don't you want to be a graceful officer? Sure you do! Bear a bit of hard time (y).)
You will have to a perform command task in which you will lead your group and try to finish your task. Act like a leader, DO NOT over-react. Help your fellows and take the initiative. Never mind if you do not finish your task.
There will be interviews on 3rd day. In interview, generally, such questions are put to the candidate which bring out his common sense, his familiarity with the current national and international happenings and current social and political trends of the world.Remember, the person who conducts interview is not merely interested in his mere knowledge. He/she pays close attention to the candidate’s reactions to various situations. It may, intentionally, endeavor to upset the mental stability of the candidate in order to discover his true personality. The Interviewer may attempt to annoy or provoke him by pronouncing his incorrectly, by not offering a chair to sit immediately, by asking to person certain odd errand, like, fetching water, serving tea, removing some furniture, etc. It is against respect to his by deliberately attributing certain wrong statements to him, pointing out to certain sports on his clothes, mixing up of personal facts, asking some vulgar questions related to sex. There are instances, where the interviewee has been asked to sing a song, recite a poem, crack a joke, etc. Such curious situations are coined by the Interviewer for bringing our the true value of the interviewee. In all such odd circumstances, the interviewee should attempt to retains his calmness and presence of mind and to have control on temperament.Usually the subjects for interview are Indo-Pak history, World history, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, General Knowledge, Current affairs. Just be calm and positive. Be natural and do not try to be artificial. If you do not know an answer its completely fine. Try to wear a decent formal dress and don't be rude. When you are not in the field behave like a gentleman ,be gracious in your personality and clothing.Keep a small comb in your pocket and always make yourself tidy and reasonable whenever you are being called by an officer in his office.
You will also be interviewed by GTO before the command task when GTO will be giving you briefing about your task. Interviews are general and test you mentally. They do not want to know how much knowledge you have believe me!

Fourth Day: It will be your last day in ISSB and you will leave and with you will leave your result( not with you but via mail). Some candidates will be asked to stay for the re-interview if they want to clear any doubt. Same tip for this interview, they will be friendly and interview will take place in a friendly environment. Act normal and be confident.

If you follow what we have told you then armed forces will WELCOME you!!

Best of Luck!!!
